I am destined to defy genres. It begins with a love of history. I become absorbed in some aspect of it and develop a passion to share it. I share by telling stories, and I’ve allowed my storytelling to take different forms: Nonfiction, Historical Fiction, Historical Fantasy, and most recently, anthologies of original work by Harlem Renaissance writers.
It all started with a picture book. I discovered my son was colorblind and was dismayed that there were no resources for him to understand and cope with it. I decided to fill the void by writing a picture book. I never could have guessed the true magnitude of that project, but determination won out, and the payoff was beautiful. All About Color Blindness won numerous awards, helped countless children, and rekindled my childhood passion for writing.
The next step was an MFA in Creative Writing at the New School. Since then, I've written two more award-winning books and have had two plays produced in NYC. My writing journey sparked other creative passions and professions: writing mentorships, graphic design, book design, and film production.
I find satisfaction and inspiration in every writing project, and my greatest joy is for readers to join me on journeys that are born of a passion and propelled by imagination. I won’t ever live long in one genre. But I will always tell you a story.
